When you think of the Algarve, you may assume it’s a summer destination. However, Portugal’s coastline boasts more then 300 days of sunshine per year making this the perfect place to visit to escape the cold wet British winter weather and enjoy a well deserved rest in the winter sun with temperatures often reaching mid 20s! Come winter, the landscape begins to turn green, lush and covered in wild flowers again perfect scenery for afternoon strolls in the sun. Many rare and exotic birds appear in the area on their migration down south.
Take the opportunity to visit Silves to discover its history. During the winter months, walking and exploring becomes much more bearable and of course more enjoyable. Castelo de Silves with its impressive red sandstone castle dominates the skyline. The castle and the Cathedral situated beside it are the first buildings you see as you approach Silves, as they sit high up on the hilltop above the town. As you may expect, the castle offers spectacular views from its eleven towers, complete with gothic doorways.
This very pleasant season with winters feeling more like spring you will always find plenty of activities to keep you busy. It may be classed as ‘out of season’ but what better time to venture down one of the many golden beaches the Algarve is so famous for and soak up the sun in relaxing surroundings with not a care in the world. There are many different types of beaches a 5 minute drive from Villa Sereia.
Villa Sereia, ideally located in the centre of the Algarve, close to beaches, golf courses, restaurants and much more. Whether you spend your time reading a book around the cosy log fire, soaking up some of the winter sun on one of the sunbeds or using the outdoor pizza oven to cook up a tasty lunch, there will be something for everyone.
It is noticeably quieter during the winter months so you benefit from fewer tourists while exploring plenty of activities still on offer at this time of year. Enjoy a stroll on the beach, a round of golf, delicious dinners out or party with the locals at carnival time. The month of February is when the carnivals take place in the Algarve all in the run up to Shrove Tuesday. If you want to join in the fun with the locals, head to the town of Loulé (also knows for its markets) where the carnival is similar in style to the Brazilian Mardi Gras. Loulé is approximately 30 minutes from Villa Sereia.
